Sonos Wired vs. Wireless: Which Setup Fits Your Home?
"Wired" and "wireless" mean different things with Sonos. Every Sonos system streams music over your network; the real choice is whether the speakers you see are self-powered Sonos speakers, or passive speakers built into your ceiling, walls or lanai and powered by a Sonos Amp.
Wireless Sonos speakers
Era 100, Era 300, Five, Move 2 and Roam 2 each have their own amplifier. You plug them into power, add them in the Sonos app and they play. Nothing is cut into the drywall, and you can take them with you when you sell or move.
They're the fastest way to get music into two to four rooms, and they're ideal for rentals, condos with HOA restrictions, and seasonal homes where you want to keep things simple.
Wired (architectural) speakers with Sonos Amp
In-ceiling, in-wall and outdoor speakers by Sonance are passive: they need speaker wire back to a Sonos Amp, which powers them and puts them on your Sonos system. You get music with nothing on the counters, and outdoor models are built for lanais and pool cages.
If your home was pre-wired, installation is a fixed price. If wire has to be run through attics or block walls, we quote it after seeing photos, because every Southwest Florida home is built differently.
Which should you choose?
Choose wireless speakers when you want flexibility, fewer holes and the lowest installed cost. Choose installed speakers for kitchens, great rooms and outdoor living, where clean looks and even coverage matter most.
Many homes mix both: an installed zone for the kitchen and lanai, plus wireless speakers in bedrooms and a soundbar in the living room, all controlled from one app.
Don't forget the network
Sonos is only as reliable as your Wi-Fi. If music drops out or the app can't find speakers, the fix is usually stronger Wi-Fi and keeping your phone and speakers on the same network. That's why many of our audio installs start with a UniFi Wi-Fi upgrade.

Common questions
Do wireless Sonos speakers need speaker wire?
No. They only need a power outlet and your Wi-Fi. Portable models run on battery.
Can I reuse the ceiling speakers my home came with?
Often, yes. A Sonos Amp can power many existing passive speakers once we test the wiring and check the speakers' ratings.
