UniFi Protect vs Ring vs Nest: Which Security Camera Platform is Right for Your Florida Home?

We install all three of the major home security camera platforms — UniFi Protect, Ring, and Google Nest — across Southwest Florida every week. None of them is universally 'best.' Each wins in a specific scenario, and picking the wrong one means you either overspend on features you don't use, or underspend on a system that frustrates you for years. Here's how we honestly recommend each platform.

**UniFi Protect** is the right call for: estates with 5+ cameras, businesses, anyone who wants license plate recognition, anyone who refuses to pay monthly cloud fees forever, anyone with an existing UniFi network. The trade-offs: higher upfront cost ($800-1,500+ for the NVR alone), professional install is essentially required, and the controller learning curve is real. For Naples luxury homes in Port Royal, Mediterra, and Quail West, this is what we deploy 9 times out of 10.

**Ring** is the right call for: condos, single-family homes with 1-4 cameras, doorbell + 2-3 outdoor cameras, anyone who values simplicity over deep control, anyone already in the Amazon ecosystem (Alexa, Echo Show). Trade-offs: $10/mo Protect Pro plan is essentially required for cloud recording (no on-site storage), AI detection is good but not great, and you're locked into Amazon's ecosystem decisions long-term. For Pelican Bay condos and standard Naples single-family homes, Ring is our most-installed platform.

**Google Nest** is the right call for: homes already deeply on Google Home + Nest thermostats + Nest Wifi, families with Pixel phones, anyone who wants the cleanest doorbell hardware design. Trade-offs: Nest Aware subscription pricing has gotten aggressive, the camera lineup is narrower than Ring or UniFi, and Google has a history of killing products (Nest Secure, Works with Nest API). We deploy Nest cautiously — usually only for clients who explicitly request it.

**Hardware comparison highlights**: UniFi G5 Bullet (best long-range PoE camera), Ring Floodlight Cam Pro (best floodlight camera + alarm), Nest Doorbell wired (best doorbell hardware design). All three have AI person + vehicle + package detection. Only UniFi Protect (with AI Pro license + AI Theta) does license plate recognition out of the box.

**Total cost over 5 years** for a 6-camera system: UniFi Protect ~$4,500 install + $0/mo cloud = $4,500 total. Ring ~$2,500 install + $120/yr Protect Pro = $3,100 total. Nest ~$3,000 install + $144/yr Aware Plus = $3,720 total. Ring looks cheapest year 1 but you pay the cloud fee forever; UniFi looks expensive year 1 but the total cost flips after year 4.
