Internet & Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is slow or keeps dropping
Things load slowly, video calls freeze, or devices disconnect in some rooms.
- 1
Run a speed test near the router
Stand in the same room as your Wi-Fi router and open fast.com on your phone. Write down the number. Then do the same test in the room where it's slow.
- 2
Compare the two numbers
If it's fast near the router but slow far away, you have a coverage problem, not an internet problem. If it's slow everywhere, even next to the router, the issue is your internet service or the router itself.
- 3
Restart the router
Unplug the router's power for 60 seconds, plug it back in, and wait 3 minutes. If you have mesh points (extra Wi-Fi pucks around the house), restart those after the main router is back.
- 4
Move the router into the open
Routers hidden in cabinets, closets, or behind TVs lose a lot of signal. Concrete-block walls and impact windows, common in Southwest Florida homes, block Wi-Fi too. Placing the router up high and in the open helps.
- 5
Reduce the load
Pause big downloads, cloud backups, or 4K streaming on other devices, then test again. If speed improves a lot, your plan or router may be too small for your household.
When to call a technician
Call us if speed is fine next to the router but poor elsewhere. That usually means the home needs a properly placed mesh or wired access point system, which we design and install.
Did this fix it?
Common questions
Will a Wi-Fi extender fix it?+
Sometimes, but cheap extenders often cut speed in half. A mesh or wired access point system usually works better for larger homes.
What speed do I need?+
For most households, 25 Mbps per 4K stream plus 5–10 Mbps per video call is a good rule of thumb.
Many Naples, Bonita Springs and Marco Island homes are large, single-story and built with block walls, which is hard for a single router to cover. Our service areas.
