Smart Home
Smart home device offline or not responding
Lights, plugs, thermostat or voice assistant stopped responding.
- 1
Try the device by hand
Use the wall switch, the button on the device, or the thermostat's screen. If it works by hand, the device is fine and the connection is the problem.
- 2
Check the internet
Make sure your phone has internet on home Wi-Fi. If the internet is down, smart home apps often can't control devices.
- 3
Restart the hub
Many systems use a hub or bridge (Lutron Smart Bridge, Hue Bridge, SmartThings). Unplug it for 30 seconds, plug it in, and wait 2 minutes.
- 4
Restart the device
For plug-in devices, unplug for 30 seconds. For smart bulbs, turn the light switch off for 10 seconds and back on. Don't remove wall switches or open electrical boxes.
- 5
Check the app
Open the device's own app (not just Alexa or Google). If it works there, try asking the voice assistant again in a few minutes.
When to call a technician
Call us if many devices are offline, if wall switches or dimmers need replacing, or if you have a whole-home system like Control4, Lutron RadioRA or Savant.
Did this fix it?
Common questions
Why did everything go offline after I got a new router?+
Smart devices remember the old Wi-Fi name and password. They need to be reconnected to the new network.
Is it safe to replace a smart switch myself?+
Switches involve household electricity. We recommend a technician or licensed electrician.
We maintain smart homes for full-time and seasonal residents in Naples, Port Royal, North Naples and Marco Island. Our service areas.
