Internet & Wi-Fi
Internet not working at home
No websites load on any device, or everything says 'No internet'.
- 1
Check if it's every device
Try a website on two different devices, for example your phone (with cellular data turned OFF) and a laptop or TV. If only one device has no internet, the problem is that device. Try the guide 'Device won't connect to Wi-Fi' instead.
- 2
Check for an outage
Use your phone's cellular data to visit your provider's outage page or app (Comcast/Xfinity, Hotwave, Spectrum, CenturyLink or Starlink). After storms in Southwest Florida, area outages are common. If there is an outage, nothing at home will fix it. Wait for your provider.
- 3
Look at the modem lights
Find the box your provider installed (the modem or gateway). It's usually where the cable or fiber line enters your home. Write down which lights are on and their colors. A red, orange, or blinking 'Online' or 'Internet' light usually means no signal from your provider.
- 4
Restart the modem, then the router
Unplug the power cord from the modem. If you have a separate Wi-Fi router, unplug that too. Wait 60 seconds. Plug in the modem first and wait about 3 minutes until its lights settle. Then plug in the router and wait 2 more minutes. Do not press any reset pinhole button, because that erases your settings.
- 5
Check the cables
Make sure the coax (round, screw-on) or fiber cable is snug in the modem, and the cable between the modem and router is clicked in firmly on both ends. Don't unscrew wall plates or splitters.
- 6
Test again
Wait 5 minutes, then try a website. If the modem 'Online' light is still not solid after a restart, call your internet provider. The problem is usually on their side. If the modem looks normal but Wi-Fi still has no internet, your router may need attention from a technician.
When to call a technician
Call us if your modem shows online but Wi-Fi has no internet, if you run a business that's interrupted, or if your network has several access points (UniFi, Eero, Orbi) that won't come back after a restart.
Did this fix it?
Common questions
Should I press the reset button on my router?+
No. The reset pinhole erases your Wi-Fi name, password and settings. A simple power restart (unplug for 60 seconds) is safe and fixes most problems.
How do I know if it's my provider or my equipment?+
If the modem's 'Online' or 'Internet' light is red, orange or blinking after a restart, it's usually the provider. If the modem looks normal but devices can't get online, it's usually your router or Wi-Fi.
Storms, power flickers and summer lightning in Naples, Fort Myers and Cape Coral often knock modems offline. A restart in the right order fixes most of these. Our service areas.
