Computer won't turn on or start up
No lights, black screen, or it gets stuck while starting.
- 1
Check power
Laptops: plug in the charger and wait 15 minutes. Look for a charging light. Desktops: make sure the power cord is in firmly and the power strip is on. Try a different wall outlet.
- 2
Check the screen
Sometimes the computer is on but the screen isn't. Listen for the fan, and check that the monitor is powered and its cable is firmly connected. Try raising screen brightness.
- 3
Hold the power button
Hold the power button for 10–15 seconds until everything turns off, wait 10 seconds, then press it once normally.
- 4
Unplug accessories
Remove USB drives, docks, printers and external drives, then try starting again. A faulty accessory can stop startup.

Don't try repair menus on your own
If you see a blue 'repair', 'recovery' or 'reset this PC' screen, stop. Some options can erase your files. Book a technician to protect your data.
When to call a technician
Call us if it still won't start, if you see recovery or reset screens, if it got wet, or if it holds important files that aren't backed up.
Did this fix it?
Common questions
Will I lose my files?+
Usually not, if you avoid reset and recovery options. A technician can often recover files even when the computer won't start.
My laptop got wet. What should I do?+
Turn it off, unplug it, don't try to charge it, and contact us as soon as possible.
