Computers
Computer is running slow
Takes forever to start, open programs, or load web pages.
- 1
Restart properly
Save your work and choose Restart (not just closing the lid). Computers that haven't restarted in weeks slow down a lot.
- 2
Close extra programs and browser tabs
Each open browser tab uses memory. Close the ones you don't need and quit programs you aren't using.
- 3
Check free storage space
Windows: open File Explorer > This PC. Mac: Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage. If less than 10% is free, the computer will be slow. Empty the Recycle Bin or Trash and remove large downloads you no longer need. Don't delete files you don't recognize.
- 4
Install updates
Windows: Settings > Windows Update. Mac: System Settings > General > Software Update. Install what's offered, then restart. Make sure a laptop is plugged in first.
- 5
Watch for warning signs
If you see pop-ups saying you're infected, or new toolbars you didn't install, stop and read our guide on suspicious pop-ups. Don't call phone numbers shown in pop-ups.
When to call a technician
Call us if the computer is older than 5–6 years, makes clicking noises, keeps freezing after updates, or if you suspect a virus. We can check it remotely or on site.
Did this fix it?
Common questions
Should I buy a 'PC cleaner' program?+
No. Most of them are unnecessary and some are harmful. Updates, a restart, and freeing up space are safer.
Will this delete my files?+
No. These steps don't delete personal files. Only empty the trash or remove downloads you know you don't need.
