Internet & Wi-Fi
Everything is offline after a power outage or storm
Power came back but internet, cameras, TVs or smart devices didn't.
- 1
Stay safe first
If there is water near outlets or equipment, or anything smells burnt, don't touch it. Call us or an electrician. Only continue if everything is dry and safe.
- 2
Check surge protectors and battery backups
Make sure power strips and battery backups (UPS) are switched on. Some battery backups turn off after a long outage and need you to press their power button.
- 3
Start with the modem
Unplug the internet modem for 60 seconds, plug it back in, and wait about 3 minutes until its lights settle.
- 4
Then the router and network gear
Next, restart your Wi-Fi router, then any network switches or mesh points. Wait 3 minutes after each. Network equipment needs to start in this order.
- 5
Then cameras, TVs and smart hubs
Once phones have internet again, restart the camera recorder, smart-home hubs and streaming devices. Most cameras reconnect on their own within 5 minutes.
- 6
Check for a provider outage
If the modem won't come online, your provider may still be restoring service after the storm. Check their outage page using cellular data.
When to call a technician
Call us if equipment won't power on, if a surge may have damaged gear, or if cameras or business systems are still offline after these steps. Use Urgent Tech Help for business interruptions.
Did this fix it?
Common questions
Why does the order matter?+
Routers and cameras look for the internet when they start. If they start before the modem is ready, they may stay offline until restarted.
Can a surge damage my equipment?+
Yes. If a device won't power on at all after a storm, it may need replacing. Don't keep plugging it in and out.
